The New Battlefield of the Search Wars

Anyone who has been using a computer for any extended period of time knows that with the amount of things we write, download, copy and e-mail every day, files are bound to get lost. There is always that one obscurely named MS Word document in that deeply hidden folder that we can't seem to find unless we wait for our computers to take a painfully long amount of time to comb through our files. We always want to remember that one particular product or job offer that was mentioned last month when you had six instant messaging windows open. Oh, how wonderful it would be if we could just hit “find” button and results would pop up as instantly no matter what the file was named just as they do on our favorite web-based search engine – even if it was just one line of text inside a .pdf file hidden in .zip archive.

Well, it is now possible. Yahoo, MSN, Google, Ask Jeeves, Hotbot, Copernic and Blinkx all offer free desktop search tools that return results almost as fast as you can type what you are searching for. All of these have an impressive amount of file formats that they search through and index, making sure that the information you are looking for, whether hidden in an Acrobat PDF file, and Excel spreadsheet, or an MP3's artist and title info is right at your fingertips.

Player-created Virtual Content Gets Real-Life Licensing

Second Life is a virtual 3D world where players can fully interact with their environment. They have the ability to create 3D masterpieces, and write custom programming.

Kermitt Quirk is a Second Life resident who created an addictive game called Tringo (which is a cross between Tetris and Bingo). Kermitt designed the game over his Christmas break, but in the past few weeks, the came has become so popular that one in four Second Life events were based on Tringo matches.

Tringo caught the eye of a fellow player, who in real life was Sean Ryan -- the Vice President of Music Services at Real Networks, former CEO of Listen.com and now founder of Donnerwood Media. After some heavy negotiating, Donnerwood will be releasing Tringo to gamers in the real world.

This is a landmark first. Since Second Life allows its players to own the intellectual property rights to any player-created content, a game created within a virtual world has aquired real-life licensing outside of that world. For more information on Tringo, click here.

Breaking, Popping and Singing in the Rain

Imagine for a second that you are in charge of an advertising agency, and you have just been given the task of marketing a classic car that has just recently been updated for modern times. What ideas would you come up with? Although there are an infinite number of possibilites, it would be very difficult to create something more memorable and visually impressive than the commercial DDB London developed for the Volkswagen Golf GTI.

On Jan. 25, UK television viewers (and Internet geeks), watched the classic dance sequence from the 1952 classic, Singin' in the Rain, with an incredible new twist. In this "updated" version, Gene Kelly is seen break dancing, popping and generally tearing up those fake cobblestone streets in ways that were probably unimaginable over 52 years ago.

Animal-Human Hybrids Create Ethics Debate

Based on this MUST READ National Geographic article.

Although digital technology has certainly made our lives easier, biotechnology and genetic engineering are making us face substantial ethical questions that humans have never had to face before. If some scientists have their way, humans may not be the only species making the ethical questions that change the world.

With our new mastery over DNA and embryonic science, scientists now have the ability to start creating human-animal hybrids called “chimeras” after the mythological Greek hybrid creatures. Why would do such a thing? Currently, the primary reason seems to be the harvesting of human organs and cells for research and for transplants. However, with scientists at Stanford planning on creating mice with a living human brain as early as this year (although mice with human neurons were already created in 2001), there is much debate in the scientific community as to what ethical lines should be drawn. .

We here at AYM Network are all about racing the future, but given the powers of gods, are we moving too fast or not fast enough?

Bluetooth Virus Possibly Infects Lexus

The one big theme of this new century will be digital convergence. All of our appliances will eventually, in one way or another, be able to talk to each other. However, it is very apparent that we are still definitely in the learning stage, and we have not yet even begun to imagine the possible risks and dangers that may come out of this brave new world.

One of the latest standards to come out is Bluetooth, which allows various electronics devices such as cellphones, PDAs, computers and cars to be able to wirelessly transfer data when they are in range of each other. In theory, this sounds great. After all, I would love to look up directions online on my notebook, have that data automatically transferred to the PDA in my pocket and then downloaded onto my onboard navigational computer in my car as soon as come within range. However, with all our devices becoming “smarter,” they have also become open to new problems – viruses.
